Medicine X Story
Working as a medical doctor, I realized that far too many patients are confused about their diagnoses, their conditions, and their treatments. There’s a disconnect between the language that doctors use and what everyday people understand. This can make you feel incredibly hopeless and anxious at an often very difficult time in your life.
We believe there is a better way. We believe all patients – regardless of age, gender, culture or condition – should have access to medical information they can understand! Everyone should feel informed and empowered in order to engage with their doctors and be involved in making medical decisions.
This is why Medicine X was created.

About Alzheimer’s Xplained
Real People
Alzheimer’s can affect any family. The Alzheimer’s Xplained story is based on a mother and son who have been touched by this condition. It reflects their story, their experiences, and their advice to others. There have also been lots of people who contributed along the way with their stories and advice. Thanks to everyone who helped create Alzheimer’s Xplained!
Our Team
The Medicine X team are doctors, artists, and creative writers who all work to make sure of one thing — the information is easy to understand. No more medical jargon! Everything is correct and up-to-date!
Experts
Each of the stories we create is different, so there are experts in the field that have reviewed the story to ensure it is spot-on in terms of medical information. These experts are professionals in medical bodies and institutions.

My grandmother also had Alzheimer's and I was excited to read such a close story. The experience of this family will help many people understand the disease.

Alzheimer's Foundation of America
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) mission is to provide optimal care and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses and to their families and caregivers.
AFA was founded in 2002 by a caregiver whose mother lived with Alzheimer’s disease from 1980-1992. At that time, there was little information available and nowhere to turn for support. His goal was to make sure that no other family living with Alzheimer’s disease would have to go the journey alone.
Since that time, AFA has grown to a network of more than 2,600 member organizations nationwide that provide direct care and services. To date, AFA has trained more than 13,000 healthcare professionals in dementia-specific care, provided free, confidential memory screenings to over 4 million people, and provides support, counseling and education to thousands.

Meet the Creators
Meet the artist and story writer behind Alzheimer's Xplained!
The artist
Amelia Navarro
Amelia Navarro is a Spanish illustrator who works in a sunny studio in Alicante, Spain surrounded of comics and accompanied by her cat Watson. In her childhood, she realized that the best way to make reality her dreams is drawing and since then she has not left the pencil. Her collaboration with Medicine X gave her the opportunity to explore an unimaginable facet of her profession: helping people understand diseases through her illustrations. Since the beginning of 2016, she has taken part in several works with Medicine X and wishes that patients will learn and enjoy her stories (like she!).
The writer
Lena De Loche
Lena De Loche is a writer and comedienne living in Los Angeles with a dog named Ewok and a writing partner named Shawn. In addition to writing comedy sketches, screenplays, stand up sets, and hilarious tweets, Lena loves translating medical doctor lingo into regular people words. She started writing for Medicine X at the end of 2015 after being introduced to the exciting new company by Shawn. It was love at first diagnosis! Growing up, Lena's father worked as a medical administrator and her big sister worked as a clinical lab technician so she feels right at home in this world. Finding the emotional core at the center of a medical journey is the most rewarding aspect of this work for Lena and she applauds Medicine X for creating a digital tool that balances information and real people so well. When she isn't writing, Lena can be found performing comedy on Hollywood Boulevard or acting in any number of films you've never heard of.
